THE LOAD
The Load is a cabinet built around an ash wood frame, wrapped in layers of discarded plastic shopping bags, primarily from Dutch brands. These bags, often rejected by thrift shops because they cannot be recycled, form the starting point of the design. By integrating them into a new object, The Load proposes an alternative afterlife for a material that is usually seen as waste.
The plastic bags are melted together, transforming them into a new, unified surface. Through this process, the material is upgraded: fragile and disposable becomes solid and enduring. The vibrant colors and familiar brand graphics burst across the cabinet’s surface, creating an eye-catching composition that is playful yet critical. While the object celebrates color and material richness, it simultaneously confronts the environmental impact of single-use plastics; a problem we are all aware of.
Inside, The Load reveals a sturdy and fully functional construction. The interior consists of an ash wood frame combined with black OSB shelves, providing strength, stability, and everyday usability. Thanks to its complete plastic skin, the cabinet is visually finished on all sides, making it beautiful from every angle and easy to place freely within a space.
The Load balances function, material experimentation, and critique, transforming plastic waste into a collectible design object with both visual impact and conceptual depth.
