Plastic Icons

Plastic Icons transforms the universally recognisable monoblock chair into a series of contemporary fossils. The chairs are pressed and flattened into wall mounted works, preserving their familiar silhouette while exposing the violence of the process that created them.

The monoblock chair is one of the most ubiquitous objects in the world, with more chairs reportedly in circulation than there are people. Its extreme accessibility and mass production have turned it into an unlikely icon of contemporary life. By compressing the chairs into solid forms, we treat these everyday objects as artefacts of our time, as if excavated from a future shaped by plastic.

Each chair is pressed onto a background made from recycled plastic waste. The pressure and force of the process remain visible in the distorted surfaces, giving the three works a physical presence and turning each chair into a distinct character. Together, they form a small cast of plastic icons, somewhere between furniture, sculpture and fossil.
