We Need was developed in response to an Open Call by Ontwerpers Platform Arnhem and Alliander, aimed at transforming and beautifying electrical substations in public space. Our proposal, titled “We Need Watt?”, was selected for seven substations in Arnhem’s Spijkerbuurt.

The redesigned substations pose a critical question: what do we really need for the energy transition? Informed by our research into the complexities of hydrogen as an energy source, the project highlights that the transition toward sustainable energy is not straightforward, but layered and nuanced. By bringing these questions into the street, We Need turns everyday infrastructure into a platform for reflection on the challenges and choices shaping our future energy landscape.
